Julia has spent her life evolving as an artist in a wild and undisciplined way. The creativity that is a huge part of her has pushed her in all kinds of directions. She has dabbled in just about everything, painting, ceramics, glass, design, always making, creating and imagining. It has been a long and varied journey taking her through teaching kindergarten kids, package design, graphic design and working in the theatre and film.
Then she discovered the joys of working with textiles. She describes what she does as painting with fabrics. Using textiles, for their colour, pattern and texture, as the building blocks of a piece and then using stitching as one would a paint brush or pencil to add depth, tone, shading, and more texture. She has played with machine stitching but has found that the slow contemplative and repetitive process of hand sewing is much more authentic and carries with it a natural and dynamic energy. Gathering fabric from all kinds of sources she is conscious of its history, where and what has it been, where and what it can be.
